Watertown Sons-of-Italy

This is a COLUMBUS DAY ALERT and your action would be helpful.

BACKGROUND - State Senator Henry Stern from Southern California (Santa Barbara, Calabasas, Los Angeles) has introduced a Bill to replace the State Columbus Day holiday with Indigenous Peoples Day. Members of the Task Force have met with Senator Stern to explain why Columbus Day matters to Italian Americans.

Italian Americans have adopted Columbus Day as their national holiday. Columbus Day is part of the Italian American heritage as well as the American heritage and a symbol of our national identity and unity. It is the day we celebrate our coming to America and our contributions. Recent attacks on the holiday by native American tribes and activists seek to replace the holiday we celebrate with one of their own. Indigenous peoples Day is a global day of protest against western European expansion and the treatment of indigenous Peoples by Europeans.

OUR GOAL is to retain the Second Monday in October as an Italian American holiday. Columbus Day is federal holiday and observed on the Second Monday of October. We have offered to compromise by accepting Italian American Heritage Day instead of Columbus Day but we have been informed that we will need to raise our voice louder to obtain a compromise. In Sacramento, the Italian community was able to forge a compromise with native Americans and the city council to recognize the second Monday of October as Italian American Heritage day. This is the Sacramento model and we hope this will serve as a model at the state level too.

ACTION REQUESTED - We need your voice to be heard in support of our goal. It would be helpful if you could contact senator Sterns office and also the offices of the 4 other Italian American state senators and let them know you support an Italian American Holiday on the Second Monday in October or , in the alternative, that you support Columbus day as a State holiday and oppose it being taken away as a holiday.

HERE IS THE CONTACT INFORMATION: BE sure to spread the word to your Italian organizations and friends to contact these Senators:

If we are unified, we can succeed!
